BATON ROUGE - A nationwide pet adoption event is coming to Louisiana this summer, offering reduced-fee adoptions at participating shelters through July 26.

BISSELL Pet Foundation's Empty the Shelters event runs July 5 through July 26, with local shelters joining the initiative as they face one of their busiest times of year.

Companion Animal Alliance, in Baton Rouge, will host its event July 11 through July 13.

The reduced fees are meant to make it easier for families to bring home a new pet while helping shelters manage capacity challenges this summer.

Since its launch in 2016, the Empty the Shelters event has helped more than 400,000 pets find homes, making it the nation's largest funded adoption event.
