Fire departments across the country share charging safety tips for Fire Prevention Week
ST. GABRIEL — The East Iberville Fire Department joined fire departments across the country, along with the National Fire Protection Association, to promote this year's Fire Prevention Week theme "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower."
The department warned residents about the risks associated with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which are used to charge most devices. While the batteries are a part of everyday life, batteries that are damaged, improperly used or charged incorrectly can create serious fire hazards.
Fire officials advised residents to use the charger that came with their device or a charger approved by the manufacturer whenever possible.
It was also advised to follow the manufacturer's charging instructions and to keep charging devices away from anything that can burn, including on your bed or beneath blankets.
Anyone who notices signs of a battery fire should go outside before calling authorities.
