Home along North 46th Street catches fire, two people saved
BATON ROUGE — Baton Rouge Fire crews put out a fire at a home along North 46th Street near Gus Young Avenue on Tuesday morning.
A spokesperson for the fire department told WBRZ that they first received a call about the fire around 11:12 a.m. Two people inside the home when the fire broke out were saved by two women who had just gotten off work. The elderly mother and son were transported to the hospital for evaluation.
"We were coming up the street, and we saw the black smoke," Valarie Johnson said. "Once we got to the light, we could see the house was burning; it was an orange fire," she said.
Johnson and her co-worker, Bianca Jackson, said when they turned the street and saw the flames, they knew they had to act.
"I would not want to see her come out in a body bag. I am just happy to get her out of there through the door," she said.
Jackson said that when the elderly lady got out, she passed out
"It was by the grace of God that she made it down the steps, because by the time she made it to the last one and touched the ground, she just collapsed right there on the ground," Jackson said.
