BATON ROUGE - Early voting started in Louisiana Tuesday, with voters heading to the polls for a long ballot that includes both candidate races and constitutional amendments.

Voters at early voting locations around the state had to choose among candidates for federal, state and local offices and vote "yes" or "no" on 10 proposed constitutional amendments.

Outside the polling booth, people said they had to pay attention to the wording while casting their vote.

"Choosing the candidates was easy, but just reading over the constitutional amendments, it took me maybe two or three minutes to read over those," one voter said.

"I thought it was a bit lengthy and a lot for the elderly to go through, decipher through, unless they had some assistance and could understand it. Because I had to read a few times," voter Arnell Jackson said.

This year's ballot includes multiple offices and multiple election cycles, which the East Baton Rouge Parish registrar of voters said happens rarely.

"We're calling it "The Great Convergence" because this happens about once a decade where a lot of the four-year and six-year offices appear on the same ballot," East Baton Rouge Parish Registrar of Voters Steve Raborn said.

LSU political science Prof. Robert Hogan said the ballot's length could lead some voters to leave questions unanswered.

"I think that this is going to be an election in which you probably see more roll-off than normal because of the large number of amendments that are on the ballot," Hogan said.

Experts say the ballot still counts even if a voter only chooses one race or one amendment.

The last day of early voting is Oct. 27. Election day is Nov. 3.
