HAMMOND - No. 19 Southeastern opened their season at home and fell to Houston Christian 34-28 Thursday night.

The Lions struck first with a 10-yard touchdown run from Calvin Smith Jr. They would lead 7-0 going into the second quarter.

The momentum shift would come later in the second quarter when Southeastern quarterback Kyle Lowe threw an interception to HCU's Micah Henderson. The Huskies would capitalize off of the turnover when Cutter Stewart connected with Keith Wheeler for a touchdown.

Southeastern went into halftime trailing 17-7.

Houston Christian took their biggest lead at the start of the fourth quarter when the Huskies nailed a 32-yard field goal to go up 34-14.

Southeastern would attempt a comeback in the final quarter of play. Quarterback Kyle Lowe threw two touchdown passes, both to U-High alum Lawson Dixon.

However, it wasn't enough to catch up to the Huskies' lead. Southeastern starts the season 0-1 and will travel to face South Alabama next Saturday.
