BATON ROUGE - When Madisonville, La., native Rylie Kuyper transferred to LSU after one season at Texas Tech, it was supposed to be a homecoming. But when the Tigers went through Spring workouts earlier this year, something was wrong.

Rylie found two lumps: one in her chest and another on her neck. Suddenly, the fatigue made sense.

"There was a part of relief," said Kuyper. "There's a reason I wasn't performing at my best, but then there's also that aspect of, oh my gosh, that's why."

After a biopsy, Rylie was diagnosed with stage two Hodgkin's lymphoma.

"That's just something that's super difficult for a healthy college athlete who's 19 to hear. It was definitely the hardest thing I've ever been through."

Rylie underwent eight rounds of chemotherapy and three weeks of radiation to treat her cancer. Those seven hard months led her to the field at Tiger Stadium, as LSU took on Texas A&M in September. Before a crowd of over 100,000 people, it was declared to the world that Rylie was cancer-free.

"It just kind of feels like a big reward after everything. It just meant a lot, especially after everything that these seven months have been for me."

After Rylie was diagnosed, she turned to social media to learn more about her cancer.

"I think like anyone in my generation, when I found out I had cancer, I went to TikTok. It was either people crying or people just being happy all the time, and I know that's not reality."

To fill that void, Rylie made a decision to share her journey of her battle with cancer on social media. That meant both the good parts and the bad.

"I've shown that it is really hard, but you can also have a good attitude, and you can try to find the silver linings in days that just really suck."

In a word, Rylie's documentation of her journey was authentic. That all goes back to the first video related to her cancer diagnosis she posted to her TikTok account "kuyperventilating" back on April 5. In the video, Rylie danced in a bedroom with two family members with the caption 'Family meeting cus I just got diagnosed with cancer.'

That video racked up over 4.5 million likes and over 33.5 million views.

Since then, Rylie has shared the lows of going to chemo treatments and the highs of ringing the bell as she finished chemotherapy and receiving gifts from several of the teams LSU has played this season.

Since being declared cancer-free, Rylie has returned to the practice field. When LSU soccer makes the trip to Pensacola, Fla., this weekend for the SEC Tournament, Kuyper will be there to support her team. The Tigers play Auburn on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m.
