2 Your Town New Roads: New Roads Harvest Festival is one of Main Street's biggest events

NEW ROADS - Main Street in New Roads is getting new life, and it's attracting more families to the heart of downtown.

This historic stretch is giving people more reasons to stop, stay and explore.

"I wake up every day, can't wait to get here, and it's all about the story," John Pourciau, owner of Roy's Jewelry Store, said.

For Pourciau, jewelry is personal. His father opened Roy's Jewelry Store along Main Street in the 1940s. Pourciau took over thirty years later. Now, he's watching a new chapter unfold right outside his door.

"Now you come on a Saturday, there are cars parked and all over the town, and people walk around with their cups of coffee," Pourciau said.

The Pointe Coupee Chamber of Commerce said Main Street has made a major comeback over the past decade.

"We actually went from having vacancies of 80% to having vacancies of like 20%. Our growth in the past few years has been amazing," Emily Bueche with Pointe Coupee Chamber of Commerce said.

The upcoming Harvest Festival is one of the biggest events of the year for Main Street. The goal is to keep businesses busy throughout the year, not just when big events are happening.

"We want you to come to Main Street to slow, to take it all in, to sit on the river, to visit our shops, to dine," Bueche said.

From traditions to fresh beginnings in historic buildings, New Roads is proving Main Street's best days may still be ahead.

The Harvest Festival runs from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1. Tickets are available here.
