BATON ROUGE — This weekend's LSU-Ole Miss matchup is one of the most anticipated college football games in recent memory, marking head coach Lane Kiffin's return to Oxford after leaving for Baton Rouge last year.
But, winding back the clock, the Magnolia Bowl has always been a significant marker for both teams' legacies.
In 1959, Ole Miss had LSU on the ropes in Death Valley until Billy Cannon's legendary 89-yard punt return to beat the Rebels 7-3 on Halloween.
More than a decade later, Bert Jones passed his way into LSU lore when he beat the Rebels 17-16 with a last-second win in Baton Rouge.
In the new millennium, LSU was trailing Ole Miss on the road by seven points during the 2013 edition of the rivalry. This was until Odell Beckham Jr. fielded a punt on his way to the end zone, returning it for a touchdown and evoking memories of Cannon's iconic run more than 50 years before.
Now, No. 7 LSU heads to Oxford to face No. 8 Ole Miss. The game will be broadcast on WBRZ, kicking off at 6:30 p.m.
