Southern's defense preparing for a big test against Jackson State

BATON ROUGE - While Southern's 50-point performance against Louisiana Christian was good for the offense, the Jags defense didn't feel as satisfied.
While they did force three turnovers, they also allowed 349 yards of offense and 31 points to the Wildcats. Three out of four Louisiana Christian touchdowns came on plays of 30 yards or more.
Limiting those "chunk" plays will be important for Southern as they face Jackson State on Saturday. The Tigers lead the SWAC in total offense averaging 532 yards per game and in passing offense with an average of 328 yards per game.
When asked about eliminating those explosive plays, Southern head coach Marshall Faulk said, "You know we have a chart. I sit down. I sit down with them and I talk to them. 'How do we win this game? How do you guys see it', right? And and and they give me kind of their their mile markers for the game. And we were under the number of explosive plays for us to win this game, which is you're going to give up explosive plays, it's going to happen, but you have to limit them. You got to make sure you don't give up the same explosive play repeatedly. That's what you can't do because that'll get you beat."
Southern will open SWAC play against Jackson State on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Jags are trying to snap a seven-game losing streak to the Tigers.
