Assumption Parish expected to make more budget cuts after 2 tax propositions failed among voters
NAPOLEONVILLE — Assumption Parish Police Jury President Jeff Naquin says that the governing body will have to make more budget cuts after two propositions renewing and re-dedicating specific taxes failed among voters.
Voters rejected both a rededication of a 1% sales tax that would have allowed one-eighth of it to be used for the Assumption Parish Detention Center, as well as a 2-mill renewal that would have run from 2028 through 2037 and collect 25% of the money for the parish libraries and 75% for the parish’s general fund.
Spoke with Jeff Naquin, the president of the Police Jury, who said that they have already had a meeting to make budget cuts, but they will have to make more after two propositions.
Without the passage of the mill renewal, the parish would not be collecting an additional $494,000 per year.
Both measures failed, with 67% of voters rejecting them.
After the propositions failed, Naquin says that the parish is "strapping our belt very tight" and that it is going to commit to "living within our means."
The parish government is now expected to draft a "reasonable budget that hopefully won't affect services for Assumption Parish residents."
