BATON ROUGE — Furniture, tires and bumpers are piling up under I-10 near McKinley Middle School, and residents say repeated calls to city and state agencies haven't led to any lasting fix.

Resident Katrina Taylor said she has contacted the Department of Transportation and garbage and waste services about the dumping, but the problem has only grown over the past several months.

"This hasn't just been a one-instance conversation. This is a revolving door at this point," Taylor said.

Taylor said agencies do show up, but the response falls short.

"I'm just calling for no reason at this point because the police come through here often. Department of Transportation comes through here often. Besides picking up trash, that's the only time I really see garbage and waste," she said.

A resident named Doris said the situation is bringing the area down.

"It's not a good thing. It's bad for the neighborhood. It trashes up the neighborhood," she said.

Further down I-10, near the former Washington Street exit, residents are pointing out additional concerns, including broken drainage covers and malfunctioning lights.

A resident named Charles Jones said the lack of lighting is a real problem for students who walk to school before sunrise. He said he knows of at least one child whose mother walked her through the area every morning with no lights.

Jones also called on city leadership to see the conditions firsthand.

"I don't care who comes through here. Somebody needs to come through here," he said.

Residents say the trash would not be allowed to accumulate like this in other parts of the city.

"I have friends in Mid City, right across the tracks, right by City Park. You know, you're not going to see any of this anywhere. On the corner, you know, collected in a pile. This isn't just happening anywhere," Taylor said.
