BATON ROUGE - Baton Rouge Police Department Chief T.J. Morse issued a statement on two officer-involved shootings that took place on Sunday and Tuesday.

On Sunday, officers were called to the Jaguar Plaza apartment complex along Harding Boulevard, across the street from Southern University's Baton Rouge campus, shortly before 6 p.m. regarding a complaint that a man threatened people with a rifle.

According to Morse, Johnny Bradley was in possession of a handgun and refused to put it down when ordered to by police. Bradley "quickly jumped up from his chair" while armed, leading to an officer firing a shot. Bradley is in stable condition; Morse said he has a "violent criminal history" as well as an active arrest warrant from a previous incident.

On Monday night, police said they were dispatched to a stabbing on Winthrop Avenue. Morse said that Devin Morris, 33, had stabbed a 71-year-old 20 times in an alleged domestic dispute before stealing the man's vehicle and fleeing the scene.

The chief said Morris led police on a pursuit before barricading himself inside an apartment for five hours. Police attempted to apprehend Morris with a police dog, who Morris began fighting as officers tried to place him in custody.

"During the struggle, the Subject grabbed one of the SRT Officer's rifle, and began fighting to gain control of the officer's weapon," Morse said.

The officer "was forced to fire a single round," which hit and ultimately killed Morris.

Morse said both officers involved were placed on administrative leave as an investigation takes place, but said he believes the officers' quick thinking "prevented potential, grave harm to the public, other officers and themselves."
