BATON ROUGE - Candidates vying for Louisiana's redrawn 2nd Congressional District seat met Monday at a forum hosted by the Baton Rouge Press Club to share their goals should voters elect them to office.

Press Club invited all five candidates to the event. Peter Williams, a Republican, Libertarian Lisa Ballay and No Party candidates Walter "Rocky" Beach and Renada "Honey" Collins all attended. Incumbent Democrat Rep. Troy Carter was the only no-show.

In opening statements, Ballay touted her past 25 years in healthcare, saying she wants the federal government to better serve its citizens.

"Washington needs somebody who is going to work for the people," she said.

Beach, a paramedic for more than 40 years, said Louisianians should be able to afford the healthcare they need.

"I'm going into these houses and I can tell, dude, we don't have money to even pay for an ambulance," he said.

Collins said she would like to see more federal funding for various projects.

"Resources that are going to make it to the state of Louisiana, but to the homes of Louisiana, the businesses of Louisiana, to the people," she said.

Williams said he wants better representation for middle-class families in the second district.

"We don't need taxation without representation. You need somebody that you can see. I'll be at the meetings, not like that incumbent that never shows up," Williams said.

WBRZ reached out to Rep. Carter and is waiting to hear back.
