PORT ALLEN — An unidentified man walked onto Holy Family Catholic School in Port Allen and tried to sell "gummy bears," an email sent to parents shared with WBRZ said.

A spokesperson for the Diocese of Baton Rouge said that "an unidentified individual who approached office staff. This individual then left the campus."

"Neither teachers or students were ever exposed to or at risk from the individual. The school resource officer was contacted immediately and handled the situation quickly," the spokesperson added.

The email to parents from Holy Family Catholic School Principal Paul Varnado went into more detail, saying the man got onto campus around 10 a.m. on Thursday by following another worker who was let in by the school's front office.

"The unidentified man was discovered to be on campus trying to sell 'gummy bears' to our school," the email says.

The email says that two school employees confronted the man and told him to leave campus, and school security officer Deputy Jeff French called Port Allen Police.

Officers detained the man and cited him for trespassing, the email continued.

The principal added that some students saw him and began calling him the "Candy Man."

Varnado said none of the children were ever in danger and campus security was quick to respond. He also said school administration has made adjustments to prevent similar incidents in the future.

WBRZ has asked the Port Allen Police Department for more details about the incident.
