GONZALES — Cats rescued from animal cruelty in Walker are available for adoption at the Cat Rescue Center in Gonzales.

Twenty cats were rescued from a home in Walker where Madison Colello was allegedly keeping them with no food or water and in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. Seventeen of the cats died, WBRZ previously reported.

Some of the surviving cats are now up for adoption, along with other cats, at Rescue Alliance's center in Gonzales.

"The rescued cats are among the many cats and kittens currently waiting for homes at the Cat Rescue Center. Each has a unique story and personality. Some have survived difficult circumstances; others were abandoned, found as strays, or simply born without a safe place to call home," the center said in a statement on Friday. "All deserve the chance to be part of a loving family."

The cats will be at the PetSmart Adopt Joy event at the Gonzales location of the pet shop on Lowes Avenue. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. this weekend.

Adoption applications are available here.
