PORT ALLEN — Former Port Allen Mayor Derek Lewis died at the Our Lady of the Lake emergency room on Thursday night, but it is not clear what led to his death, the West Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office said.

An autopsy is still pending for the 65-year-old former mayor, the coroner's office added on Friday morning. It was not immediately clear whether foul play is believed to have been involved or whether his death was self-inflicted.

"At this time, the Port Allen Police Department does not have an official statement regarding this matter," the city police department's spokesperson told WBRZ.

Before his death, Lewis was set to go to trial after being arrested for indecent behavior with a juvenile and third-degree rape. He was also sentenced in 2012 to 40 months in prison and two years of probation after pleading guilty to racketeering.
