Federal prosecutors attempting to revoke citizenship for Livingston Parish business owner
BATON ROUGE - A Denham Springs man who owns a business in Livingston Parish and has been in the U.S. since 1993 is the target of a recent federal denaturalization case, The Advocate reported Monday.
Court documents show that prosecutors in Louisiana's Middle District have filed to revoke naturalization status for 68-year-old Nachhatar Singh on Aug. 27.
The newspaper said Singh arrived in the U.S. from India in 1993 as Sawaran Singh, but then changed his name in 1996 after receiving a deportation order for skipping immigration hearings.
The Advocate spoke to Singh, who owns a gas station in Livingston and has run the store for the past 26 years.
“So many times I catch somebody who has stolen something from my store, a drink or candy; I never complained. I only told him, next time be careful, and if you’re hungry, tell me, I can give you a drink,” he said. “I try to help people because I know how it is to be a poor man living in this world.”
Singh is due back in court in December.
