BATON ROUGE — Funeral services were announced on Saturday for former Southern University head football coach Gerald Kimble.

Prior to serving as head football coach from 1989 to 1992, Kimble played quarterback for the Jaguars in 1960, leading the team to a national Black college championship.

He also helped to transform the Green Oaks High School football program in Shreveport by leading the team to its first winning season, district championship and playoff appearance in 1979.

In addition to football, Kimble was also a member of the 1960 Southwestern Athletic Conference championship baseball team.

After his coaching career, he continued to support Southern as a football commentator with the Southern University Radio Network.

Kimble died on Tuesday at the age of 84.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, April 11, at the Zion Baptist Church in Shreveport at 11 a.m.
