BATON ROUGE — Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents issued 141 dove hunting-related citations during the opening weekend of dove season from Sept. 5 to Sept. 7

The majority of the citations were written for using bait to hunt the birds, with 108 citations, according to LDWF. Hunting with bait is against federal law and is filed with the U.S. Attorney's Office and prosecuted in Federal Court.

Several citations were also issued for aiding other hunters to place bait, hunting with unplugged shotguns, hunting from public roads, hunting without a basic license and taking home game other than birds.

LDWF reminds residents that these offences can bring a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail for each crime. Hunting without a basic hunting license brings up to a $50 fine.
