BATON ROUGE - Governor Jeff Landry is requesting the LSU Board of Supervisors to find a way to add a Charlie Kirk statue on campus after Kirk was shot and killed during a Utah event.

Kirk would be the first person with no ties to the university to get this kind of honor. Some students at the university disagree with the possibility.

"I don't think that's very smart, think it's going to be vandalized. He also never came here, so I don't know what the point of that will be," said LSU student Destiny Connolly.

Currently, several statues can be found across campus, including Tigers and LSU's legendary athletes like Billy Cannon, Pete Maravich, Simone Augustus, Skip Bertman, Bob Pettit, and Shaquille O'Neal. This context frames the debate about the potential addition of a statue for someone with no direct LSU ties.

"Somebody on the LSU campus should be celebrated for actually going here or doing something monumental. I know Charlie Kirk was an influential person, but not to the LSU community," one student said.

Meanwhile, other students question the controversy his statue would bring to campus.

I think whether you were a fan or not, the campus should try to remain neutral," LSU student Jennifer Quintero said.

"I think that will cause a lot of controversial debate, and not only do I feel like a lot of students on the campus would not approve of that at all," another LSU student said.

On the other hand, some students are happy for a Charlie Kirk statue to come on campus.

"Charlie Kirk was a really good man, he stood up for what he believed in and what he thought was right. I agree with that, it's a shame what happened to him. I would love to have a statue of him on campus, I think it's a great way to honor him, and he and his family are always in my prayers," LSU student Sydney Waters said.

Turning Point USA's LSU chapter told WBRZ that they currently have no comment on the possible statue at the time.
