The heat remains intense Monday, but the weather pattern is beginning to shift as a few more thunderstorms become possible through the middle of the week. That could eventually bring some relief from the prolonged stretch of oppressive temperatures.

Today and Tonight: Monday will bring another hot afternoon, but there may be a little more activity on the radar like what we saw on Sunday evening. Highs will reach the mid to upper 90s, with heat index values climbing into the lower to mid 110s.

An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m. Monday. Most locations will stay dry, so any storm that develops could offer a brief break from the heat, along with heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds. Temperatures will remain warm overnight, with lows generally in the upper 70s to around 80°.

Up Next: The bigger change comes Tuesday into Wednesday as the upper-level pattern begins to favor a few more thunderstorms. Storms will still be hit-or-miss, and storm outflows provide more opportunities for new development.

That doesn't mean the heat disappears. Highs will remain in the mid to upper 90s through much of the week, although increasing storm coverage could knock temperatures down in spots.

Tropics: The Atlantic and Gulf remain quiet from a tropical development standpoint. The National Hurricane Center is not expecting tropical cyclone formation anywhere in the Atlantic Basin, Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico during the next seven days.

That is a notable change from just last week, when several tropical waves were being monitored across the Atlantic. Increasing wind shear helped disrupt those systems before they could organize, and the quieter pattern is expected to continue for now.
