PRIDE — A mother and father were arrested after their children were found living in a roach-infested home without running water or air conditioning.

Arrest documents detail the conditions in which East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office deputies found Cyrus and Samantha Mayo's five children living. The kids' ages range from seven months to nine years old.

Deputies arrived at the couple's home along Stoney Point Burch Road on July 7, when the heat index reached approximately 105 degrees. Four of the children slept in a mobile home on the property, while the youngest stayed in a shed with the parents. Neither building had running water or air conditioning.

According to the arrest records, roaches were found on the walls, ceilings and inside the refrigerator of the mobile home.

"The infestation was described as continuous throughout the residence, with cockroaches falling from the ceiling during the assessment," the warrant reads.

Investigators noted garbage, spoiled food and other filth throughout the home. They also did not find any infant formula, medical supplies or medication.

None of the children were being educated, according to the documents.

The Department of Child and Family Services took all five children into custody and brought them to a hospital. All of them required some level of medical attention, the arrest documents say, and the seven-month-old was underweight.

EBRSO says Cyrus Mayo acknowledged that children should not live in such conditions and said that he should have reached out for assistance.

On Aug. 31, a deputy revisited the home and noted that the living conditions had "improved tremendously," although the cockroaches remained.

Cyrus and Samantha Mayo were arrested on Oct. 19. They each face five counts of cruelty to juveniles.
