DENHAM SPRINGS — The First Baptist Church Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Denham Springs.

Its first burial was in 1868, and it's survived war, hurricanes and other floods.

But when unprecedented rainfall came down across the Capital Area in August 2016, it was nearly wiped away by the "No-Name Storm": The Great Flood of 2016.

The storm forever altered Denham Springs.

"Seventy-seven percent of the homes and businesses here had at least 18 inches of water," Mayor Gerard Landry told JP.

The First Baptist Church itself was destroyed, but it later reopened at a new location. The cemetery was also thought lost until the city, volunteers and donors resurrected the cemetery, cleaning it up and repairing broken gravestones and replacing others.
