GREENSBURG - A new school year is around the corner, and St. Helena Parish isn't just focused on getting students back in the classroom, but on making sure they're ready for life beyond it.

With a focus on academic achievement, career readiness and expanded support services, St. Helena Superintendent Kelli Joseph says the school year ahead is all about outcomes.

The district is emphasizing student performance, both inside and outside the classroom.

“This year, there's a really big focus on growth,” Joseph said. “We really want our learners to understand the importance of passing the test, but then also the value of passing the test.”

The district is adjusting to a new accountability system from the Louisiana Department of Education, a different way of measuring school success.

To help students succeed, St. Helena is continuing its high school internship program, giving learners real-world experience and credentials before they graduate.

“We do have a lot of our learners who were able to experience the internship program last year, and so now we're just going to continue that starting this school year,” Joseph said.

The program aims to build skills outside the classroom, and Joseph says it's already making a difference.

“Our kids grow every year. Of course, they don't grow as fast or as large as we would like for them to grow, but they are growing, and so that, I think, is going to be one of the key areas that we can focus on," Joseph said.

This year also brings a new conflict resolution program, giving students tools to handle emotions and everyday challenges.

“We will give our kids the skills needed to be able to solve their problems more positively,” Joseph said.

While academic success is the goal, safety is the standard, she added.

“We're doubling down on our protocols regarding safety. And you know, really making a big push to get our kids to pass the test,” Joseph said.

After 14 years on the job, Joseph says St. Helena schools will only continue to grow stronger. Students start school on Aug. 5.
