CENTERVILLE – A man from Tampa who was arrested in St. Mary Parish over the weekend faces additional criminal charges after attempting to escape jail, according to police records.

On Saturday, Jonathan Matthew Piriou, 25, who was being held at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center, allegedly charged at a deputy. The deputy deployed his taser but it was unsuccessful and Piriou forced his way out of the cell and into the hallway after a struggle.

Authorities allege Piriou was trapped in the locked hallway, attacked responding officers and gained control of a taser. It took several deputies to subdue Piriou, who was returned to his cell.

Two deputies received medical treatment from the injuries they sustained during the altercation.

Piriou was arrested on Sunday morning on a warrant for the following charges: disarming a police officer, resisting an officer, resisting an officer with force or violence, battery of a police officer-injury medical attention, battery of a police officer, attempted escape and simple robbery

Bail for all his charges has been set at $235,000.
