NEW ORLEANS - Officials said Thursday that they identified a recovered body off the shore of Lake Pontchartrain as a missing boater.
The body of Joseph Grice, 51, was recovered around 9 a.m.
Law enforcement and the Coast Guard were notified of an overdue vessel shortly before midnight Tuesday. Two men were reported to be in the water off Lakeshore Drive on Lake Pontchartrain's south bank.
The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said Grice voluntarily jumped in the water but struggled to stay afloat, leading to both men not being able to get back to the boat. The survivor reached the shore, was recovered by New Orleans Police and told them about Grice.
The LDWF Enforcement Division is the lead investigative agency for this fatal incident. The New Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will determine an official cause of death.
