BATON ROUGE — Long-distance truck drivers and local commuters weren't using the bridge carrying Interstate 10 over the Mississippi River during a snowstorm, so a local couple did.

"It was quite chilly," Adam Penton said, "but this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity so we had to take it."

At lunchtime Tuesday, Adam and his wife, Shelby, traveled up the bridge in the westbound lanes, paused to take a photo and shoot some video, then after venturing farther up the span crossed over to the eastbound lanes to begin their descent.

WBRZ will have an interview with one of the bridge walkers at 10 p.m. Thursday.

Then a pair of state troopers caught up to them.

"No, the cops did not harass us," Penton said. "One officer appeared to be enjoying the walk and the view as well, while the other appeared to be annoyed by our shenanigans.

"We were told 'No pedestrians on the bridge' and were left alone."

The two left the highway via the Highland Road-Nicholson Road exit and walked a short distance home.

Pedestrians are banned from interstate highways, apparently also when there is no traffic on them.

"I'd say it was one of the best core memories I've made in a long time," Penton said.
