BATON ROUGE — Mental health advocates raised awareness for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Hotline at the State Capitol on Tuesday, which is recognized as 988 Day.

Nearly a dozen vendors were there to provide resources, alongside speakers, live music from the Southern University Human Jukebox Marching Band and free food. 

Organizers say that nearly one in five adults face mental health conditions each year. 

They encourage anyone facing a crisis to call 988 as soon as they can. 

"It's a number that anyone in the state of Louisiana can call, text, or chat 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and be connected to someone who cares, who will listen and who will help them through any kind of emergency," Holly Howat with the Office of Behavioral Health said. 

Another 988 event will be held at the Main Library on Goodwood Boulevard at 6 p.m.
