'Mrs. Katy Wells Day' honors Livingston Parish crossing guard fatally struck while directing traffic
DENHAM SPRINGS — Friday is "Mrs. Katy Wells Day," honoring the crossing guard who was fatally struck in April while directing traffic outside Gray's Creek Elementary School.
Friday was chosen to honor Wells because it coincided with her birthday—Oct. 18. The Livingston Parish Council established the day of remembrance in September.
Wells was struck by a truck during the afternoon of April 30. Following the crash, 64-year-old Darren Goudeau was arrested on vehicular homicide and DWI charges.
Since her death, speed limits on roads surrounding Gray's Creek Elementary have been reduced. Memorials, including a mural outside another school she used to work at, have also been dedicated to Wells, who worked as a crossing guard for four decades.
