GREENSBURG — The St. Helena Parish Police Jury must, within the next several weeks, call for a special election to fill the vacant seat left by the passing of District 3 Police Juror Willie Morgan earlier this week.

Morgan's seat must also be temporarily filled within 20 days of his passing, which was first reported Tuesday. The Police Jury will appoint an interim juror until the election is held, the Secretary of State's office said.

As of Wednesday, the Secretary of State's office has not been notified about the vacancy, and a date for a special election cannot be set until this is done.

Morgan was first elected in November 2019 and won re-election four years later. His term was set to expire in January 2028.

Funeral arrangements for Morgan have yet to be finalized.
