BATON ROUGE - Now tied for the fifth deadliest year on record in Baton Rouge, the latest homicide count shows 81 within city limits in the past year, and Tuesday, two people were tied to recent high-profile deaths.

Two people, including a suspect in the Swan Avenue shooting that resulted in the death of an 8-year-old, were arrested for the killing of an 18-year-old on I-110 North in March 2024.

The Baton Rouge Police Department say Yancey Jarrell Jr., 23, and George Applewhite III, 20, were booked for first-degree murder after a shooting on I-110 North resulted in the death of Jayrick Washington, 18.

Southern University student Jayrick Washington, 18 was shot and killed on I-110, five days before his 19th birthday. Police initially stated they believed the shooting resulted from a road rage incident in March, but police said the shooting may have happened from a mistaken identity in May.

Jarrell was previously booked for one count of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted first-degree murder after Diellon Daniels was killed in a Nov. 27 shooting near a barber shop on Swan Avenue. Jarrell was one of three men arrested and booked for Daniels' murder.

Applewhite was also already in custody when he was booked with Washington's death. In February, he was accused of having a machine gun and was investigated for possible connection to ATM robberies along with six other members of the "Bleedas" gang. Then, he had another arrest in April for weapons charges, manslaughter and murder.
