NAPOLEONVILLE — Two propositions were rejected by voters in Assumption Parish.

Prop 1, a rededication of a 1% sales tax, would allow up to 1/8 of that tax to be used for the Assumption Parish Detention Center. Voters rejected the rededication by 67% to 33% with 6,700 total votes, according to complete but unofficial results.

Prop 2, which is a 2-mill renewal that runs from 2028 through 2037, collects 25% of the money for the parish libraries and 75% for the parish’s general fund. Approximately $494,000 per year would be collected.

Voters rejected the renewal by 67% to 33% with 6,725  total votes, according to complete but unofficial results.

For Ward 1 of the Justice of Peace race, three Democrats ran against each other: Lakisha Harris, Daryl Ovide and Christy Smith.

Ovide and Harris finished with the highest percentages of the vote at 35% and 32%, respectively, leading those two to head to runoff. Smith finished third at 32% and trailed by 19 votes, complete but unofficial results say.

For Ward 1 of the Assumption School Board, Gil Verner, no party, is running against Democrats Andrea Johnson and Patrick Lawless. Lawless says his main goals if elected were to “work diligently alongside the other board members to ensure our school has the resources and support needed to help students succeed.”

Lawless and Johnson finished with the highest percentages of the vote at 41% and 38%, respectively, leading those two to head to runoff.

For Ward 6 of the School Board, Democrats Don Carter and Carl Franklin ran against each other. Carter said his main goal is to “close the gap between the central office and the people it serves - our parents, our students, and our teachers.”

Carter won with 60% of the vote.
