GONZALES — There's a new sheriff in town, the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office announced — 90-year-old Elizabeth "Betty" Delaune. 

The sheriff's office named Delaune an Honorary Sheriff of Ascension Parish on Tuesday, honoring the lifelong Gonzales resident.

"She has watched Gonzales grow from a small rural town into the thriving city it is today, and she’s been busy serving others along the way," the sheriff's office said on social media.

Delaune spent 30 years working at the Bank of Gonzales, volunteered at St. Elizabeth Hospital, served with the APSO Community Outreach Team, and more.
