City of Walker reverts to former route for annual Christmas Parade
WALKER — The City of Walker has scrapped plans to alter its upcoming Christmas parade route, choosing instead to stick with its traditional path after logistical and safety hurdles proved too steep.
In a statement released by city officials, Chief of Operations Jamie Etheridge explained that a detailed review of the proposed route change uncovered major complications tied to shutting down a primary state highway.
Accommodating the detour would have required extensive traffic control operations, specialized signage and an elaborate rerouting plan for commercial trucks and oversized vehicles to comply with state highway regulations and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. According to the city, the equipment, manpower and associated costs went far beyond standard municipal operations.
"Ultimately, our responsibility is to ensure that this community tradition is conducted safely, responsibly, and in a manner that makes the best use of public resources," Etheridge stated in the memo, noting that returning to the familiar route is the most practical choice for this year's festivities.
