HAMMOND — Officials say they intercepted a package today carrying $20,000 in cash that a Tangipahoa Parish resident mailed to New York state after falling for a scam earlier this week.

According to deputies, a caller claimed to be from Paypal and told the resident something was wrong with her account. The caller told her to mail the money to an address in New York state and she did.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office said it worked with law enforcement in New York to track the package and stop it before delivery. Police said the money is on its way back to the victim and law enforcement in New York is still working to catch the scammers.
